Budget Hearing Information
Know what to say
Strict time limits are enforced in such large meetings so prepare your brief statement before you speak in order to maximize your time. Introduce yourself and who you represent. State your position and be sure to share that you “support the CitizensforPhoenix.org Proposal.â€
Additionally, CitizensForPhoenix.org is about unifying the community; do not allow your comments to reflect negatively on other organizations facing these severe cuts. Remember, we're in this together.
Know what to expect
Budget hearings tend to draw hundreds of people out to voice their opinions in favor of the interests they represent. This is a good thing – it's part of democracy – but it can be overwhelming. Budget hearings usually last for two hours or more so here are some pointers on how to ensure your time is well spent.
If you do not have time to stay for the whole meeting or don't wish to speak publicly, your attendance is still important. The process can take just a few minutes. Simply walk into the welcome area, pick up a citizen card, fill it out (make sure to write that you are in support of the CitizensForPhoenix.org Proposal), and turn it into the support staff in the welcome area. This card will be given to the council whether you are able to speak or not. Again, make sure you include your support of CitizensForPhoenix on the citizen card you turn in.
If you would like to speak, you will want to arrive early and let it be known after you fill out your citizen card that you wish to speak. Know that priority is given to those that live within the district in which the budget hearing is being held and patiently await your opportunity to speak.
If you plan to speak, make sure to prepare and know what to say . Time is limited, so make your voice count.
